backspace in overstrike mode, small problem driving me crazy

put the typing mode into overstrike mode (press the insert key)
place the cursor in the middle some existing text
press backspace
press ctrl-z to undo it

e.g.

before change

abcdefg

go into overstrike mode
place cursor between c and d and press backspace
you get:

abdefg

now press ctrl-z while still in overstike mode
you get:

abcefgh
